Todd Cantwell is not ready to join a club of Liverpool’s level, according to Steve McManaman.

The Liverpool legend has admitted his surprise at reports linking the Reds with an interest in the Norwich City starlet.

It was claimed earlier this week that the Premier League leaders are weighing up a summer move for 21-year-old Cantwell after he impressed as Norwich were defeated 1-0 by Jurgen Klopp’s side at Carrow Road over the weekend.

It was even suggested Liverpool could be willing to pay as much as £30million for the youngster, who is playing in only his second full season with the Canaries.

Cantwell will have earned plenty of admirers with his performances this term. He has been a shining light for the rock-bottom club with six goals and two assists, emerging as one of Daniel Farke’s most important players.

He has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of James Maddison, who left Norwich for Leicester City in 2018 and is now a full England international and has been recently linked with a big-money move to Manchester United.

But McManaman doubts whether Cantwell currently has what it takes to make that leap to a top-six club.

“In the future possibly, but I don’t think he’s done enough yet to warrant playing at that level,” the former Liverpool midfielder wrote in his column for HorseRacing.net.

“I get the fact that he wants to play at a higher level. I get the fact that he thinks he’s playing well in a struggling Norwich team. That’s completely understandable.

Signing Jadon Sancho could help Liverpool dominate the Premier League for years, says Jason Cundy

“It would surprise me if Liverpool were very interested in him, considering the younger kids Liverpool have in and around the squad at that under-23 level.

“Again, we will wait and see. I can only take on face value what I’ve seen of Todd Cantwell and he’s done well in various games.

“Norwich has a lot of really good young players and have done for a number of years so you have to trust what they’re doing down at Carrow Road.”
