Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes poses similarities to when Eric Cantona arrived at Old Trafford in 1992.

This has been suggested by former Red Devil Paul Parker, who played alongside the flamboyant Frenchman for four years.

A deal for midfielder Fernandes was finally completed towards the end of the January transfer window, Man United forking out around £47million for his signature.

Fernandes made his debut earlier this month and while he wasn’t able to help them beat Wolves in the Premier League, there’s a lot of excitement about what the Portugal international can do for the club.

He’s expected to add some much-needed creativity for Man United going forward, much like Cantona did.

However, Fernandes has big shoes to fill if he’s going to have as similar an effect as Cantona, who helped transform the fortunes of Man United.

In Cantona’s five years, the club went from a team that struggled to win trophies to the dominant force in English football.

But Parker is excited to see what ‘artist’ Fernandes can bring to Man United, although he was keen to stress that it’s unlikely the 25-year-old will have the same effect Cantona did.

Speaking on behalf of the Racing Post, Parker said: “He [Fernandes] is someone who makes opportunities and is brave enough to make those passes to try and win football matches.

“There are some players who just have that way about them, they’re artists.

“You can’t make those people. Artists aren’t made, they’re born.

Man United target Bruno Fernandes ‘is from another planet’, says former Sporting Lisbon boss Carlos Carvalhal

“It was like when Eric Cantona came in 1992, he came to a team that just missed out on the last First Division.”

Parker did also say how the other Man United midfielders must pull their weight in order to let their new signing shine.

He added: “But the whole onus can’t be on Fernandes, some of the onus has to be on the midfielders around him. They’ve got to help him out and do things for themselves now and again. But they’ve mainly got to work hard to give him the ball in space and then make things happen.

“We were missing an edge but got in Eric and United’s whole concept changed, particularly in the way we attacked. One player made so many more options and more players did more themselves.

“Fernandes won’t have the same impact as what Eric had…United right now have to focus on being a side that can score.”
