Tottenham and Newcastle secured their places in the fourth round of the FA Cup with wins against Middlesbrough and Rochdale respectively.

Both the Premier League sides scored early goals to make their nights more comfortable after needing replays at home to progress.

Giovani Lo Celso put Spurs 1-0 up against Middlesbrough in the third minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tomas Mejias tried to play a quick ball from defence but it went straight to Lo Celso, who found the bottom corner with a clinical strike.

Spurs doubled their lead in the 15th minute when Erik Lamela carved through Boro’s defence and stroked the bell home with the outside of his foot.

Tottenham did not add any further goals to their two early strikes, but were in control against Championship side Middlesbrough at the break.

Jose Mourinho’s side looked comfortable in the second half but squandered several chances to put the game out of sight.

Boro got an 83rd minute goal through George Saville to give Spurs a nervy finish but they held out to progress to the next round.

Newcastle got off to a flying start against Rochdale with two goals in the first 20 minutes.

Eoghan O’Connell gifted the Magpies the lead in the 17th minute with an own goal before Matty Longstaff added the second three minutes later.

Miguel Almiron added Newcastle’s third in the 26th minute to effectively end any hope Rochdale had of making the fourth round.

Joelinton ended his 20-game wait for a second Newcastle goal when he converted a low cross from the right in the 82nd minute.

It was the Brazilian’s first goal at St James’ Park and handed the Magpies an unassailable 4-0 lead over Rochdale.

Rochdale scored a late consolation four minutes after Joelinton’s goal thanks to Jordan Williams, who fired a strike in off the base of the post.
