Manchester United have been dealt a huge blow in their pursuit to sign striker Erling Braut Haaland.
It is understood the Red Devils sent scouts to watch the Red Bull Salzburg man in action against Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 19-year-old was unable to help them progress to the last-16 as they were beaten 2-0. Salzburg will thus play in the Europa League after Christmas.
Haaland – who has scored an incredible 28 goals in 22 games this term – could be on his way out of Austria with two Bundesliga clubs revealed to be in talks with the player.
The Norwegian landed in Germany yesterday to speak to representatives from Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.
Salzburg’s sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed this news in a press conference, saying: “We are involved in all discussions.
“Of course, we also knew that Haaland was in Leipzig and Dortmund yesterday.
“Everyone in Salzburg wants the best for him.”
Haaland is not the only player on the verge of leaving the club.
His teammate Takumi Minamino is set to join Liverpool on January 1, as long as he passes the medical.
Liverpool are getting the Japan international for a very cheap price as Minamino has a release clause of just £7.5million.
Freud said that Minamino is “ready to take the next step in January.”
