Van Dijk was instrumental as Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup last summer, and he also helped the Reds amass their record points tally in the Premier League (97).

However, despite this, the Drive host believes Man City forwards Gabriel Jesus and Riyad Mahrez were better in 2019 for what they achieved with their countries.

Jesus played a pivotal role in Brazil’s Copa America victory, scoring in the final of the South American competition, while Mahrez captained Algeria to Africa Cup of Nations glory.

Lionel Messi, who claimed a record sixth Ballon d’Or on Monday evening, came in second in his list, while Liverpool and Senegal forward Sadio Mane took top spot.
