It’s 99 international goals and counting for Cristiano Ronaldo who added one more Portugal goal to his stunning collection on Sunday.
The Juventus star, 34, took his total up to 98 when he bagged a hat-trick during Portugal’s 6-0 win over Lithuania earlier in the week.
And given their final Euro 2020 qualifier was at Luxembourg, a nation not known for its footballing prowess, many would have fancied Ronaldo to get at least two more goals.
Ronaldo was forced to settle for one though but he was quite lucky to get that anyway.
Bernardo Silva clipped the ball into Diogo Jota’s path whose scuffed effort hit the Luxembourg goalkeeper before Ronaldo helped it in on the goalline, essentially taking the Wolves frontman’s goal!
That put the reigning European champions 2-0 up and that was enough to book their place in next summer’s tournament.
Below you can see the video of Ronaldo’s 99th goal for Portugal and judge for yourselves on whether he could have left it.
Perhaps Ronaldo took a leaf out of club teammate Aaron Ramsey’s book with the Welshman taking a goal off Ronaldo in a Champions League match at Lokomotiv Moscow earlier this month.
Ronaldo’s free-kick squirmed under Lokomotiv goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato’s legs but Ramsey poked it in just before it crossed the goalline.
Ramsey did apologise to Ronaldo after the game, however.
He said: “I thought the keeper was a lot closer to me and had a chance of diving back and maybe clearing it.
“My instinct took over to make sure that it went over the line.
“I’ve apologised to Cristiano.”
