Virgil van Dijk has become the fifth Liverpool player to withdraw from international duty this month.

The Reds defender will not play in the Netherlands’ final Euro 2020 qualifier against Estonia on Tuesday after pulling out due to ‘personal circumstances’.

The Netherlands will be without their captain Virgil van Dijk

He joins Mohamed Salah (ankle), Joe Gomez (knee), Jordan Henderson (illness) and Andy Robertson (knock) on the list of players who have returned to Merseyside early.

The Dutch FA did not provide any further information when explaining Van Dijk’s absence.

The 28-year-old captained the Netherlands to a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland on Saturday, which secured Oranje qualification to Euro 2020.

Luck was on Ronald Koeman’s side, however, as Steven Davis skied a 32nd-minute penalty for Norn Iron.

The Netherlands will appear at a major tournament for the first time since 2014 after missing out on Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.

Van Dijk’s absence for his country could mark him down as an early doubt for Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace next weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are unbeaten in the league this season and eight points clear of second place Leicester after 12 games.
