Vincent Kompany has said Manchester City’s Premier League title win last season was made all the more sweeter by the fact he knew they had broken the hearts of Liverpool fans.

The clubs were locked in an exhilarating fight for the English crown last term, with Man City coming out on top by just one point and Kompany lifting his fourth title before departing the club.

That rivalry has been resumed this season, with Liverpool currently six points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men at the top of the table.

The Reds have the chance to extend their lead to nine points when they take on City at Anfield on Sunday for their first league showdown on the season.

And, in perfect timing ahead of the game, an extract of Kompany’s upcoming book has been published describing how he revelled in ruining Liverpool supporters’ hopes of ending their long wait for the league trophy.

Having blown a healthy lead earlier in the campaign, Reds fans still harboured hope of sealing the title on the final day of the season and there were celebrations when they heard City had slipped behind at Brighton while they took the lead against Wolves.

But the Kop’s joy didn’t last long. The Blues came storming back to thump the Seagulls 4-1, meaning they were champions for the second consecutive season by the narrowest of margins.

Kompany will be hoping his former team-mates can do the same this term, starting with a win in front of the Reds faithful on Sunday afternoon.

“I had a good friend who was at Liverpool for their game against Wolves that day,” Kompany wrote in his upcoming book, ‘Treble Triumph’, which presents a behind-the-scenes look into Man City’s historic treble-winning campaign.

“After we had won and we’d celebrated, I rang him to ask how their crowd had reacted when Brighton took the lead against us.

“He told me it was like a party inside the ground.

“He said some of their supporters were crying in the stands saying, ‘We’re going to do it’.

“When I heard that, I realised it was worth us having a scare just to spoil their day that little bit.”
