There won’t be a host of players who can say they’ve stopped Lionel Messi in his tracks.
But after Wednesday night, Slavia Prague’s David Hovorka is one of them.
The Czech defender successfully timed his challenge on Messi in the first-half of Slavia Prague’s narrow 2-1 defeat to Barcelona.
It was greeted with a huge roar by Hovorka, who was beyond pleased with himself for tackling the Argentina captain.
Retweeting a GIF of the tackle, Slavia Prague’s official Twitter account said: “When the crowd love you and you know it!”
Jan Boril’s second-half strike cancelled out Messi’s early opener, before Luis Suarez’s cutback was deflected into the net by Peter Olayinka just before the hour mark.
The Czech club pestered Barcelona’s goal in search of an equaliser late on, and were thwarted by crucial blocks from Gerard Pique and Frenkie de Jong.
Slavia Prague boss Jindrich Trpisovsky hailed the effort of his players against Barcelona.
He said: “If you have to lose, you should lose in this style.
“I don’t say this often but if I skip the opening 20 minutes, the guys played a fantastic game. If I realise again who stood against us, I must appreciate our attitude, even though it’s a loss and we have zero points.
“Our performance escalated and in the last 10 minutes we had many opportunities in the box which could have ended with a goal.”
